Mary Teresa Gilmore

Mary “Teresa” Gilmore, 89, of Sayre, PA passed away Thursday evening May 5, 2016 at the Elderwood Healthcare Center, Waverly, NY. “Teresa” as she was known by her family and friends was born in Dushore, PA on March 12, 1927 and was a graduate of St. Basil’s High School. Her father, William Gilmore had been a school teacher, but retired as cashier of the First National Bank of Dushore. Her mother, Gertrude Lusch Gilmore, a 1917 graduate of the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, died when Teresa was five years old. Teresa also graduated from the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. The Cadet Nurse Corps was established in 1943 to increase the number of nurses available for civilian and military hospitals during World War II. Early in her nursing career, Teresa served as a Lieutenant in the Merchant Marines and traveled to South America on the S.S. Uruguay of the Moore McCormick Lines. She worked as a nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Upon her return to Sayre, Teresa worked at the Robert Packer Hospital, most of this time was with the Cardiology Unit. She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany in Sayre and the Altar and Rosary Society. Teresa was a member of the Sayre Historical Society since 1994 and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1995. She was formerly an active member and served as corresponding secretary of the Sayre Business and Professional Women’s Club for many years, past president of the Bradford County Division of the American Heart Association, member of the state board of the American Heart Association and served as a cholesterol screener for the AHA covering 15 counties in Pennsylvania, honorary member of the Bradford Unit of the American Cancer Society, served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Bank and at the Robert Packer Hospital and was a member of the Diahoga Grange for many years. Surviving are a nephew, two nieces and several cousins. A mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, May 27, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, South Elmer Ave. Sayre, PA. Burial will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Dushore, PA. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home 314 Desmond St. Sayre, PA.
