Kevin B. Barrett, 56, of Asylum Township, died November 27th, 2012. He was born Dec 27th, 1955 the son of Patrick J. Barrett Jr. and Helen Elizabeth Barrett. He graduated from Towanda High School in 1973 and joined his father in the family farm. In 1982, he married Catherine Mattocks of Towanda. Together they had two wonderful daughters, Samantha who is a congressional staffer and Abigail who is a teacher. Both daughters had their wedding receptions at the farm. He was a dairy farmer, a township supervisor, and served on many civic and agricultural organizations. He is survived by his wife Catherine and their daughters and their husbands, Samantha and John McDonald of Cheverly, Maryland and Abigail and John Fitzpatrick of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his mother, Helen Elizabeth Barrett, his brothers and their wives, Patrick III and Diane Barrett of Canton, Daniel and Janice Barrett of Athens, and his sister and her husband, Jennifer and Lawrence Gallagher of Scranton, and their families. He is also survived by his wife’s parents, Joseph and Joanne Mattocks of Towanda, and their children Debbie Ferguson, Joel Mattocks, Jeff Mattocks, Jodie Grimes, and their families. He enjoyed his work as a farmer especially the many years he farmed with his late father, Patrick J. Barrett Jr. He served on a number of cooperative agriculture groups including the Dairy Farmers of America, Eastern Milk Producer Board, Bradford County Conservation Extension, and Agway Board. He was elected to serve on the board of supervisors of Asylum Township for the past 23 years and served as chairman. In 2005, he was elected to the board of directors of the Claverack Rural Electric Cooperative, and was very active in the organization. He also served with distinction on the following boards: Wellsboro Electric Board, Pennsylvania Rural Electric Association (where he was recently elected as Chairman), and Federated Insurance Board. He was very involved in dealing with natural gas development, as a township supervisor and landowner. Specifically he also handled natural gas development as president for the Green Hills Farm in Liberty Corners, which holds the land of his mother’s extended Beirne family. Kevin’s charm and sincerity won him friends in all the facets of his life. He was a willing volunteer in many civic activities, and frequently selected for leadership roles. He was a very active member in the Towanda Lions Club for 25 years. He also served on Towanda Area Education Foundation Board. Kevin found particular delight in his favorite pastime, which was hunting. He regularly hosted friends and family on the farm to hunt. Benny, his family’s beloved Brittney Spaniel, was his companion for all but the most formal activities. Kevin had many interests. Throughout his life he continued his education with many courses directed at his work and other interests, which included everything from piloting, to pesticides, to the Penn State course for cooperative directors. He enjoyed opportunities to travel and visited Poland, Argentina, Alaska, and other places. In recent years, he made business trips to many parts of the country. The family will receive friends at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home 217 York Ave. Towanda, PA on Sunday Dec 2nd, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. The funeral will be where he worshipped all his life, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Third St., Towanda, on Monday, December 3rd at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, N. Towanda, PA. In his youth, Kevin was very active in the 4-H programs for rural youth, as a member and adult volunteer.
